To prepare for our in-home newborn session, you won’t have to do much, yet there are a couple of things to keep in mind.
1. Schedule your photoshoot for late morning
I highly recommend scheduling your newborn’s photoshoot during the late morning hours, ideally around 10:00 am. Babies tend to be at their happiest and most calm during this time. This calmness not only allows you to relax into the session but also enables me to work more efficiently. Also the late morning offers the best and most consistent indoor lighting, which ensures that we can capture beautiful, naturally lit images of your newborn in the comfort of your own home.
2. Prepare your necessities in advance
For a seamless and stress-free session, it’s important to gather your essentials ahead of time. Consider selecting blankets, outfits, or any special items you’d like to include in the photoshoot. Opt for snugly fitted onesies in neutral hues and soft, neutral-toned swaddle blankets for a timeless and cohesive aesthetic. Remember, simplicity is key when it comes to dressing your newborn.
3. Relax about pre-shoot cleaning!
I fully understand the demands that come with the newborn phase, and my aim is to make your photoshoot a stress-free experience. There’s no need to meticulously clean your entire house before my arrival, a bit of organization could be beneficial though. Upon arriving at your home, we’ll take a quick walkthrough to determine the best spots for our session. If there’s any clutter, I’m here to lend a hand in tidying up and decluttering those chosen spaces. Our focus typically revolves around the master bed or the inviting comfort of your couch in the living room. So, take a breath, and know that there’s no need for a pristine house.
4. Adjust the home temperature accordingly
For optimal comfort, particularly during winter shoots, it’s advisable to set your thermostat between 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. In the summer months, I’ll typically close windows to prevent drafts, maintaining a cozy environment that keeps your baby content throughout the session.
5. Ensure all the kiddos are well-fed
A well-fed baby is a happy baby, and the same goes for toddlers, older siblings. Prior to my arrival, make sure to feed your little ones, allowing them to enter the session in a contented state. Should the baby need additional feeding during the photoshoot, whether it’s breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, I’m more than happy to capture those tender moments as well.
6. Prepare siblings for the fun
If you have older children, it’s beneficial to prepare them for the session ahead. Let them know that this is an exciting and enjoyable experience. My aim isn’t just to capture posed smiles but genuine interactions and moments of joy. Encourage them to be themselves, as I strive to document your family authentically during this precious season of life.
That’s all there is to it! Your newborn photoshoot shouldn’t be stressful, nor should it consume your entire day. I’ll be in and out 1-2 hours, leaving you with a gallery brimming with precious memories of this special time. I’m eagerly looking forward to capturing these cherished moments with you and your family soon!
